The electrical engineering sector in Northern Sweden is being reshaped by the green transition and rapid digitalization, requiring companies to rethink traditional business models toward greater sustainability, flexibility, and circularity. The project examines how these companies can adapt and innovate their business models to remain competitive in this changing landscape.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the sector face increasing complexity in maintaining relevant customer offerings, ensuring competence provision, and securing strategic positions within evolving value chains. Existing business models often remain rooted in traditional industrial logic, which inadequately addresses emerging requirements for flexibility and circularity.

The study maps current business model practices within the Electrical Engineering sector and examines how the green transition and digitalization influence these models. It aims to identify opportunities and challenges for SMEs in adapting and innovating their business models.

Objectives

  • Map and understand how SMEs’ business models in the Electrical Engineering sector respond to the green transition and digitalization.
  • Identify key drivers and barriers for business model innovation in this context.
  • Develop a framework of recommendations for business model innovation and support competitive, sustainable business models.

The results will contribute to a mapping of the current business models within the Electrical Engineering sector, particularly in the context of the ongoing green transition and digitalization. Furthermore, this research will develop a framework of recommendations to support business model innovation in Northern Sweden.
